Large ‘Corinithian’ Carriage Clock with Repeat
A fine and large (semi giant) Carriage clock with push repeat by Richard & Co of Paris. The clock is substantial and has an unusual case design of extraordinary quality. The engraved dial mask is very finely engraved (see close up pictures), the barley twist columns with Corinthian capitals are beautifully detailed, the heavy gauge cast brass construction gilded with thick bevelled ‘white’ glass panels to each side. The dial is perfect and free of chips and hairlines. The movement is stamped with Richard & Co and is numbered. The original and extremely fine, silvered platform and escapement is large and has a compensated balance wheel. The hourly gong strike is mellow and has the one strike for the half hour. Interestingly (for horologists) this clock features a clever Hour wheel design which stops the hours from getting muddled if the clock took a ‘bump’ on your journey. The name carriage clock was derived from the original French term of ‘Pendule Portative’, a clock designed to be robust and yet elegant and portable to travel with.
