Rare repeating Carriage Clock in Silver -1924

Here we have a rather interesting clock made by the Gold & Silversmiths of Regent Street, London with Date letter ‘i’ for 1924, exactly 100 years old! The clock is unusual in that the size is ‘giant’, or certainly extra large. Most similar clocks in silver were normally a quarter of the size and non-striking. This fine example has the classic ‘C’ scroll handle and rectangular case with an ‘off white’ enamel dial showing Arabic numerals and a fine pair of original blued steel hands. The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths of Regent Street sold many clocks in this style and were all fantastic quality. A truly rare clock with mellow hourly strike. Sold with outer leather case (distressed) and silver plated key. Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co amalgamated with Garrard & Co in 1952.

‘Petite Sonnerie’ Carriage Clock.

A smaller size gilt cased carraige clock in the ‘Gorge’ style, surrounded by thick bevelled ‘white’ glass. An attractive masked dial, showing Roman numerals and alarm aperature. The main dial is in great condition and shows the inner line within the Roman numerals, typical of Henri Jacot. This clock benefits from having quarter striking or what is known as a petite sonnerie, whereby the clock strikes the quarters automatically, and if the repeat button is pressed, will strike the full grande sonnerie (the hours and quarters). This clock has just undergone a full restoration and has all original parts, and original escapement. Sold with a 24 month guarantee.

Henry Capt, mignonette ‘Grande Sonnerie’ Carriage Clock.

A fine and perfectly proportioned small ‘Grande Sonnerie’ carriage clock with alarm, strike and push repeat. What makes this one quite interesting is the size. This is a very small example by Henry Capt of Geneva. The gorge case is wonderful and has an outer protective leather covered travel case. The dial is perfect and painted with Roman numerals and outer Arabics for the minutes, which is always attractive. The backplate is engraved with the number 95. Henry Capt was an exceptional maker and his father who bears the same name. Father and son were based in Geneva, Switzerland from the early 1840’s and produced many exceptional and highly decorative carriage clocks for the discerning customer.

Henry Capt, Genève Beautiful Miniature Enamel Panelled Carriage Clock

A small repeating grand sonnerie / petite sonnerie with beautiful Art Nouveau guillouché enamelled panels and enamelled dial in a gorge case, by Henry Capt of Geneva, Switzerland, a clock, watch, and jewelry maker renowned for his high-quality pieces. The front and side panels are a wonderful bright blue translucent enamel laid onto fine engine-turned silver plates, and decorated by gold and deep red shaded Iris flowers with a fine gold outline. The dial is well-balanced and has a nice patina, with perfect Roman numerals and delicate blued steel spade hands, signed ‘Henry Capt, Genève’, ‘Ls Gallopin & Cie Succrs’, with a fine golden border and matching subdial for the alarm function. The movement is quite exceptional, especially for such a small piece, wonderfully designed and fit neatly within the plates, partly visible along with the silvered escapement through the bevelled glass panel to the top. Under the base plate is a three-position lever for grand sonnerie, petite sonnerie, and silence, striking on two gongs, and stamped with serial number 9079. It comes with the original leather carry case and key, in great condition itself and with a dark red velvet interior. Made circa 1890. A very rare and special clock indeed.

Miniature Timepiece with Original Case

You don't often see these little miniature carriage timepieces with their original case and original key. This one has both and a fine example it is. The case has much more detail than the average and the leather covered outer case has the little latches to secure the protective lid. The clock has been thoroughly serviced and overhauled and we also striped the case down, polished and professionally lacquered. The dial is immaculate, and the hands are original too. A very small and great example for the collector or perhaps a special occasion or birthday! Only 8cms tall.

Auguste a Paris early Carriage clock

This is a very good example of the earlier style of carriage clock. Before the case design and construction of carriage clocks became ‘standardised’ with Cornich, One piece and Gorge/Cannalee, these multi-pieced cased clocks were being produced in small numbers. Auguste was an early carriage clock maker and in this particular case he constructed, it has been engraved and has the rarer shuttered rear. The escapement is also quite rare, having an engraved Balance cock and Helical hair spring reminiscent of chronometers. The clock is bell striking and repeating. The clock has had a full overhaul – in house, and the dial shows in very small letters below the six – Auguste a Paris which is also engraved on the spine of one of the plates. The maker is listed in ‘The Watch and Clockmakers of the World’ VOL 2 – Auguste Paris , Carriage clocks, 1840-1880. These earlier clocks sometimes had the Lions head handle mounts which are very attractive, which this clock also has and certainly from the earlier date of 1840.

Parkinson & Frodsham Carriage clock

A ‘Gorge’ case Carriage clock with enamel dial signed Parkinson & Frodsham, Royal Exchange, London. Charles Frodsham was amongst the finest clock and watchmakers in the 19th Century and was the successor to Arnold. As well as numerous other medals , C.Frodsham won the first-class medal at the Great exhibition of 1851 & Parkinson and Frodsham were Chronometer makers and produced some of the finest gold pocket watches of the 19th Century. This clock has hourly strike on a gong and once for the half hours. The case has substantial original gilding with a matt ‘frosted’ finish and is very attractive. The push repeat button above the enamel dial and retains the original silvered ‘Platform’ with lever escapement. The hands are the original and elegant against the well proportioned Roman numerals. The dial is perfect. A good investment clock. Height is with Handle up

Oval Grande Sonnerie with Engraved Case

A very rare example of a fine engraved oval, ‘Gorge’ case carriage clock with an engraved and gilt dial mask in very original condition. The movement is bell striking (two bells) on the hours and quarters, the silvered platform escapement is working perfectly with a strong action, the oval gilded case has an engraved shaped handle which is very attractive. This fine Carriage clock is exceptionally rare and in superb condition for its age dating to circa 1870-80. This clock has been fully dismantled including the escapement and fully overhauled, Oiled and Tested and is sold with a 24 month R.T.B Guarantee. This clock may have been sold through Tiffany’s of New York (as there are traces of the name) .
