A fine Marine chronometer dating to around 1830-40 and made by the well known clock, watch and chronometer makers (Santiago) James Moore French of the Royal Exchange London . We are currently researching the history of this fine 'instrument'. What we can tell you for the moment is that it is a very attractive triple signed Chronometer dial. First we have the superb maker, French of the Royal Exchange who won two Admiralty prizes in 1825. Then we have John Poole of Upper Smithfield, again fine Chronometer makers who 'adjusted' and fitted a new Helical hairspring. Many years later in 1878 it was then in the workshops of Richard Hornby of Liverpool, fine chronometer makers in their own right too. They must have had it for a complete overhaul and adjustment. The 56hour (two day) fusee with compensated balance and spring detent has just been fully overhauled and is currently keeping time to 1 to 2 seconds a day. The case is of good construction in mahogany with concealed dovetails and brass corners and escutions, a lock and key for the lower box and push catch to view. The movement is signed and numbered 6781. A good investment piece.

A local chronometer for us, R.A. Jones & Son of Southend-on-Sea were the local jewelers and clock and watch retailers. This chronometer was probably supplied to a large yacht around the 1890s. It features the classic 3-tier mahogany case, brass bound with handles, latched lid and lock and key. The chronometer with the classic gimbaled support, allowing the clock to be reversed to be wound by the ratcheting chronometer key. The dial showing roman numerals, up down indicator, and seconds dial. The chronometer movement has the spring detent, jeweled escapement and is keeping excellent time, as you would expect from a marine chronometer. Sold with a 12 month UK guarantee.
